The clinical director at the New Era Archway Veterinary Centre, Nick Thomas, set up a JustGiving page earlier this week to help one of his clients, Spencer Keenan, and his dog, Manic.
The Staffordshire bull terrier had torn the cruciate ligament in its knee, requiring an expensive operation needing specialist equipment and training. If left untreated, the injury could have led to Manic having to undergo amputation, which in turn would put have put pressure on the other knee. Given Mr Keenan’s financial situation, Mr Thomas decided to create a fundraising account calling upon the goodwill of Jersey residents to help get the injured animal back on his feet.
Islanders were quick to show their support, with over £4,500 being raised in just a few days – well over the original target of £3,000 required for the operation.
Manic will now be able to receive the surgery later this month, hopefully restoring his mobility, which would otherwise have been severely reduced. Mr Keenan has had Manic for six years and the pair have a strong bond, particularly as Manic is also a support dog that helps with his owner’s disabilities.
Mr Thomas said everyone was ‘blown away’ by the generosity that had been shown and expressed ‘huge thanks’ to all who donated and helped support Manic and Mr Keenan.
