The Glitzy Dog Run in Corlears Hook Park

Coming soon to Corlears Hook Park is probably the most snazzy dog run anywhere downtown.

Some four years in the making, the new neighborhood dog run is set to debut in the next couple weeks. Little more than one year after work on the project began.

The overall design – as finalized by the Parks Department in 2018 – includes a hard surface with obstacles like water features, new fencing, benches, and entryway corral. The older small dog run was buried to raise the grade.

It’s also worth revisiting the history of this spot.

The first tenement was built in Corlears Hook in 1833 and as more new Americans poured into the neighborhood, so too the bars and brothels. By the 19th century, Corlears Hook, colloquially called “the Hook” was a notorious slum where prostitution reigned. In fact, it’s believed the word “hooker” is derived from this sordid connection.

By the end of the 19th century, the shipyard docks were removed, landfill was set in place and Corlears Hook Park opened in 1895 as one of the city’s first municipal parks.
